Funding Description for *AIRISE Open Call 5*
What is AIRISE?
AIRISE is a cascade-funding scheme under Horizon Europe that helps manufacturing Small & Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) and mid-caps integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics into their production lines. The fifth open call focuses on projects that:
* Improve sustainability – lower energy consumption, reduce / reuse waste and cut CO₂ emissions.
* Increase agility & resilience – make processes adaptive to market or supply-chain shocks.
* Enhance job quality – design human-centric workplaces with intuitive human–machine interfaces that are attractive regardless of age, gender or cultural background.
Financial Support
* Type of action: Cascade funding (Financial Support to Third Parties – FSTP)
* Maximum funding per project: *Not explicitly capped in the call fiche.* Previous AIRISE calls funded up to €70 000 per SME; use this as an indicative ceiling until the official FAQ is released.
* Funding rate: 100 % of eligible direct costs + 7 % flat-rate for indirect costs.
Who can apply?
* Manufacturing SMEs or mid-caps legally established in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country.
* Consortia not required – single applicants are eligible.
Where to apply?
All proposals must be submitted on the AIRISE website (airise.eu/calls). The EU Funding & Tenders Portal is not used for submission.
Why use AIRISE?
* Fast contracting (typically < 3 months from submission to payment)
* Access to Europe-wide network of Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs)
* Advanced experiments with on-site and remote coaching by AI & robotics experts
> Tip: Contact your National Contact Point (NCP) in your country for personalised eligibility advice.

🇪🇺 Strategic Advantages
EU-Wide Advantages and Opportunities for “AIRISE – Open Call 5”
1. Single Market Access
Why it matters: The EU Single Market aggregates 450+ million consumers and more than 23 million SMEs under one regulatory roof.
- Seamless commercialisation of AI-driven solutions in all 27 Member States without the need for additional national certifications once CE-marked.
- Faster route-to-market for AI/robotics applications in manufacturing thanks to mutual recognition of standards (e.g., Machinery Directive, Low-Voltage Directive, RED).
- Opportunity to integrate European value chains (e.g., electronics in Germany, precision engineering in Italy, advanced materials in France) and sell across borders from day 1.
2. Cross-Border Collaboration
Key features of AIRISE: Cascade funding, pan-European Digital Innovation Hub (DIH) network, technology transfer services.
- Build multinational consortia with complementary expertise—e.g., a Spanish SME specialising in cobots, a Dutch photonics centre, and a Czech automotive plant as pilot user.
- Access to AIRISE’s network of AI & robotics DIHs in more than 15 countries, facilitating joint testing and demonstration.
- Knowledge exchange via EU‐wide mentoring, staff secondments and cross-border living labs, lowering the “valley-of-death” risk for deep-tech prototypes.
3. EU Policy Alignment
- Digital Europe Programme: AIRISE directly supports the uptake of AI and advanced robotics in SMEs—core pillars of DEP.
- Green Deal & Fit-for-55: Robotics-enabled process optimisation can cut industrial energy use and emissions, aligning with EU climate targets.
- SME Strategy for a Sustainable & Digital Europe: Focus on empowering smaller manufacturers with cutting-edge AI fits this strategy perfectly.
- Industry 5.0: Human-centric, resilient and sustainable production paradigms promoted by the Commission are embedded in the AIRISE service catalogue.
4. Regulatory Harmonisation
- Unified GDPR framework eases compliant AI data handling across borders.
- Testing within EU sandbox initiatives (AI Act pilot schemes) can speed regulatory clearance and create first‐mover advantage once the AI Act enters into force.
- Alignment with upcoming harmonised standards for trustworthy AI, boosting market acceptance and public procurement eligibility EU-wide.
5. Innovation Ecosystem Access
- Direct link to Europe’s premier research centres (Fraunhofer, CEA-List, TNO, VTT, etc.) through AIRISE technical partners.
- Connection to EIT Manufacturing and EIT Digital nodes—leveraging incubators, FabLabs and acceleration programmes.
- Preferential entry to pan-European testbeds (e.g., DIH² network) reduces CAPEX for pilots and validation.
6. Funding Synergies
- Cascade grant can serve as “Phase 0” financing before applying to Horizon Europe Pillar II or EIC Accelerator for multi-million follow-on rounds.
- Blending options with InvestEU or national Recovery & Resilience Facility (RRF) funds for large-scale deployment.
- Complementarity with Erasmus+ for skills development and Interregional Innovation Investments (I3) for scaling manufacturing lines in less-developed regions.
7. Scale and Impact Potential
- AIRISE pilot results can be replicated EU-wide via the network of 200+ DIHs, amplifying impact beyond the initial beneficiaries.
- Common EU technical specifications allow replication in diverse sectors—automotive clusters in Central Europe, aerospace in Occitania, agro-tech in Andalusia.
- Visibility in EU success-story portals and matchmaking events increases the likelihood of attracting additional private investment (VCs, corporate venture arms) at the European scale.
8. Strategic Value of Operating at EU Level
- Risk diversification across markets and supply chains mitigates geopolitical shocks.
- Consolidates Europe’s strategic autonomy in AI & robotics, reducing dependency on non-EU tech stacks.
- Creates a critical mass of data and use cases to train domain-specific AI models under EU control.
- Positions beneficiaries for participation in future EU mission-oriented partnerships (e.g., Made in Europe, AI-Data-Robotics PPP).
---
Bottom Line: AIRISE Open Call 5 is more than a funding opportunity; it is a springboard into Europe’s integrated innovation arena. Leveraging the Single Market, harmonised regulations and extensive cross-border networks, beneficiaries can accelerate technology maturity, de-risk market entry and maximise socioeconomic impact across the entire Union.
